Paleolithic Diet – Why would I want to eat like a caveman?
The Paleolithic Diet or Paleo Diet is a fairly new concept but it just makes so much sense! Our bodies were genetically designed to eat a certain way. We started out as hunters and gatherers and our genetic makeup has not really changed in 40,000 years. Cavemen instinctively knew what was good to eat and what was not. It is how they survived and prospered.
The Paleolithic diet did not cause obesity, disease or vitamin deficiencies. Cavemen knew how to stay healthy. When you compare them to modern day man, you can see that somehow along the way we have fallen off the rails. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease are all a product of our lifestyles. These problems were unknown to man until agriculture and food processing was introduced into society.
The caveman diet consisted of seeds, fruits and vegetables that they were able to forage and eggs, meats and fish they were able to hunt or fish for. Although there have always been grasses and grains, they were not included in the Paleo diet because they were inedible. It wasn’t until much later when food processing, milling, etc. was discovered that grains became a staple of the human diet. It was around that time that people began having health and obesity issues.
What is the Paleolithic Diet?
The Paleolithic Diet is getting back to the basics of fueling our bodies the way we were intended to eat. You need to forget everything you have ever learned about conventional nutrition. When you reduce your carb intake and increase your proteins, vitamins and fats you give your body no choice but to turn fat into energy as it was designed to do. You will not have any of the sugar crashes that are only associated with carbohydrates so your blood sugars will be stable.
