Is the Paleo diet really a natural cure for diabetes?
Anyone who follows a Paleo diet will tell you how great they feel. The lack of spikes in blood sugar levels and abundance of energy and vitamins from this way of eating is proving to be a blessing for many people with Type 2 diabetes. I have even read several stories of it being a natural cure for diabetes who suffer from Type 1 diabetes.
Many argue that it does not actually “cure” but rather it manages it so that the need for medication is eliminated or significantly lowered and the many associated risk factors of diabetes such as heart disease, damage to kidneys and eyes is also greatly reduced. A study of the effects of the Paleo diet on diabetics was conducted at the Lund University in Sweden that provided proof that the Paleo diet is much more effective for managing diabetes than the standard diabetic diet.
At the end of the study, the Paleo diet produced superior results in the following variables:
- lower levels of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c)
- lower levels of triacylglycerol
- lower diastolic blood pressure
- lower body-weight
- lower BMI
- lower waist circumference
- and higher mean values of high density lipoprotein cholesterol
Granted this was a relatively small study but the results were measurable and consistent. This is supported by countless first-hand reports of other diabetics, both Type 1 and Type 2 who have reported they no longer require medications or have considerably reduced the amount of insulin needed. Many insulin dependent diabetics have been able to control their diabetes with the Paleo diet alone and no longer need the injections.
There was another study of the Paleo diet for diabetics done at the UCSF that also showed proof of the success for diabetics on the Paleo diet. After only 2 weeks there were significant improvements in blood pressure, blood glucose levels, cholesterol and triglycerides. The group on the Paleo diet also lost weight and were able to reduce their medications.
With all of this proof, why is the Diabetes Association still recommending the less effective Mediterranean diet as a way to control diabetes? It seems that the Paleo diet may be a natural cure for diabetes or the closest thing we have come to so far.
